Mythology tells that Hercules, in 2280 B.C., grasped the northern end of Sardinia and tore it from the Nurra peninsula. He squeezed it so tightly in his fist that he narrowed its center, leaving three inlets shaped like his mighty fingers. Because of this, the Romans named the island *Herculis Insula*.
